It is the new year and that means that there are new boating laws and regulations to be aware of in some states and on some bodies of water. While this is not a complete list and you should check with your state boating agency, this short list can help you make sure you are legal and safe on the water in 2013. (If you know of any other laws taking effect this year, please include them in the comments to benefit all of us.)

Illinois – As of January 1, 2013, all boaters must clean and remove all plants and animals from boats before transporting them.

Lake Mead and Lake Mohave – As of January 1, 2013, boats that do not meet the Environmental Protection Agency Rule for gasoline spark-ignition marine engines are prohibited.

Rhode Island – As of January 1, 2013, boat registration fees have increased.

Washington – As of January 1, 2013, all boaters age 50 and younger are required to complete a boating safety course.
