On Tuesday September 13, NASBLA conference attendees will be treated to a humorous and engaging presentation by noted author and Psychologist Dr. Christopher Chabris. Dr. Chabris will discuss his book The Invisible Gorilla: and Other Ways Our Intuitions Deceive Us and explain what he says are the six “everyday illusions,” which are intuitive but mistaken beliefs that we all hold about how our minds work. The following day (Wednesday September 14th at 10:00AM) Dr. L. Daniel Maxim and John Fetterman will explore the impact and applications of Blind Spots and these "everyday illusions" in the personal and professional lives as Boating Law Administrators, Strategic Planners and marine patrol officers on the water.
Situational awareness is a key element in avoiding those blind spots, SA also clears the path in avoiding "Inattentional blindness" and "Change blindness" terms that we will bring into focus and directly relate to accident causation and human factors in avoiding accident injuries and fatalities.
Don't let the terms scare you away. This may well be an enlightening presentation, in your quest to reduce recreational boating accidents and creation of training, to fill the gaps - gaps that can be filled to serve recreational boaters and marine patrol officers alike.
