11-11-12 OREGON, OH Coast Guard rescues 2 from capsized Lake Erie boat sfgate.com (11-12-12) The USCG says 2 men rescued from Lake Erie were treated for hypothermia after their boat capsized in NW Ohio. The CG says someone reported the situation in the lake a few mi. E. of Toledo on Sun. (11-11). A rescue boat crew from Toledo and a helicopter crew from Detroit located the men, who were holding onto the stern of the boat. They were in the water for more than an hr. before being hoisted into the helicopter and taken for medical care. The helicopter crew's co-pilot says the men were smart to wear lifejackets, stick together and remain close to the boat, making them easier to spot from the air. Officials didn't immediately identify the rescued boaters.

11-12-12 BANANA RIVER, FL Boater falls from craft in Banana River, walks to shore floridatoday.com (11-12-12) A boat spinning in circles on the Indian River after the owner fell off flipped over in the Banana River and came to a stop as authorities were called to monitor the vessel.
No one was injured and the boater was spotted walking onshore just S. of the Pineda Causeway.
Deputies said the man apparently fell from the 10-f.t boat before it began spinning in circles. The boat was spotted about 10:45 a.m. The Brevard Co. sheriff’s helicopter was also called out to help search for anyone in the water. The boat then flipped over in the water and washed up near the shoreline.

11-12-12 BRANFORD, CT Coast Guard, Branford Fire Department aid boat taking on water nhregister.com (11-12-12) The USCG and the Branford FD responded to an emergency on a 28-ft. power boat Mon. afternoon (11-12) after the operator reported that the boat was taking on water, a CG officer said. Two people were on board the boat, which was in Long Island Sound off the town's coast. No one's life was at risk, said CG Petty Officer Anthony Kozak. "The gentleman reported that his boat was taking on water" and that it was coming from an engine, Kozak said, describing the boat as a "smaller yacht." "It was coming up the hose for the raw water pump," which had broken, Kozak said. "The boat's fine," he said. "They're escorting it up the Branford River so he can get his engine repaired."

11-11-12 POMPANO BEACH, FL Boaters rescued after boat capsizes wsvn.com (11-12-12) A day out on the boat turned into a sinking situation. All 6 men aboard that boat made it back to shore in Pompano Beach after it started to sink over the weekend. The 25-f.t Bayliner slowly filled with water when huge waves suddenly flipped it over and threw all the boaters into the water. "Well," said Igor Batista, "what happened was we went out there, the boat filled up with water, and the thing just flipped and rough seas. We came back, and as soon as the boat flipped, Sea Tow and tow boats got us and Officer Dundy came and helped us, and we're back safe, thank God." Luckily, Sea Tow picked them up and transferred them to a BSO boat. "It's pretty rough. Sea Tow did a pretty good job of saving us and everything is cool."

11-07-12 BELMONT BAY, VA Cheryl Ann Alston of Fairfax identified in accidental death at Va. boat dock washingtonpost.com (11-07-12) The body of a Fairfax woman who fell into the Potomac River from her boat dock was identified Thur. (11-08). Cheryl Ann Alston, 66, was found in Belmont Bay, a short distance from where she docks her boat at Occoquan Harbor Marina in Prince William Co., police said. Police said they believe she accidentally fell into the water, and no foul play is suspected. Her body was recovered by dive teams Wed. (11-07) after police could not find her the day before. Family members had reported her missing on Mon. (11-05). Alston was last seen by the boat Sat. (11-03) around 7 p.m. A marina manager declined comment Thur. Family members could not be immediately reached.
“It’s as if she leaned over, put her purse on the boat, and was going to unlatch it … and [the boat] probably pushed away from the dock and she lost her footing and fell,” a friend said.

11-09-12 TARPON SPRINGS, FL Coast Guard rescues four from sinking boat off coast of Tarpon Springs tampabay.com (11-10-12) Fourteen mi. off the coast of Tarpon Springs, a fisherman used his cell phone to call 911. His 34-ft. fishing boat was sinking around 10 a.m. Fri. (11-09) with 3 others aboard. Pasco Co. emergency dispatchers notified the USCG. Just before 1 p.m., a CG helicopter from Air Station Clearwater spotted and rescued 2 men in the water, wearing lifejackets and clinging to a cooler. But the 2 other men had decided to swim to shore, CG officials said. A passing boat found one of them. CG crews continued to search for an hr. before the helicopter discovered the 4th fisherman. The men were treated for hypothermia after floating in the 67-degree water, but reported no other injuries. One was taken to a hosp.

11-10-12 COLOCKUM, WA Seattle duck hunters injured when boat hits rock wenatcheeworld.com (11-10-12) Three Seattle duck hunters were injured early Sat. morning (11-10-12) when their aluminum fishing boat struck a large rock in the Columbia River, S. of Rock Island Dam. On impact, the boat’s 34-y/o driver, Kevin Charap, was thrown over the vessel’s windshield onto its bow. He suffered a broken collarbone, but was reported in stable condition this morning at Central Washington Hosp. Corporal Jason Reinfeld, spokesman for the Chelan Co. Sheriff, said the boat’s 2 passengers, both Seattle men in their 30s, were not seriously injured. Their names weren’t immediately available. The victims reported the incident just after 6 a.m. The men took off from a boat launch off Tarpiscan Road and were headed downriver when they hit the rock island. Paramedics responded to the boat launch, and were ferried to the rock island in a Chelan Co. PUD boat. The hunters’ 19-ft. boat was still on the rock Sat. morning. Neither drugs nor alcohol appear to be a factor in the crash.

11-09-12 EASTON, MD Man rescued from Miles River after boat overturns stardem.com (11-11-12) Local FDs, state police and Talbot Co. EMS came to the aid of a man whose 14-ft. aluminum boat overturned in the Miles River around 8:30 p.m. Fri. (11-09). Jamie McNeal, chief of Easton VFD, said when he got to the scene the man was wading in the water wearing a chest wader full of 40 degree water and clinging onto the bulkhead, and he'd been there for about 30 min. But McNeal said the man's cell phone wasn't damaged when the vessel overturned, so he was able to call for help. The man had a blinking spot light attached to his hat, so he was easy to see at night in the middle of the river.
McNeal said along with the hypothermia that could have struck the man while in water that cold, the water could have also filled his chest wader and sunk him to the bottom. The man was taken to Memorial Hosp. at Easton, treated for exposure and then released.

11-05-12 PETALUMA, CA Man Nearly Drowns After Forgetting to Plug Boat petaluma.patch.com (11-09-12) A man nearly drowned after he forgot to plug the bottom of his boat and the watercraft sank.
The incident occurred on Mon. (11-05) at the Petaluma Marina when workers in the offices facing the Petaluma River heard a man shouting for help. Several people ran to the man’s aid, while others dialed 911. The drowning man was rescued by Rob Terry, an agent with Wine Country Real Estate, who hooked his arm into the man’s lifejacket and pulled him out of the water. The man was not injured in the accident, although his 12-ft. aluminum boat was completely submerged in the Petaluma River.

11-12-12 JACKSONVILLE, FL 40-foot sailboat hits jetties, takes on water news4jax.com (11-13-12) A 40-ft. sailboat hit the St. Johns River jetties early Mon. morning (11-12) and began taking on water, according to the USCG. The operator, from Rhode Island, was trying to avoid a large freighter in the channel when the "Secret Passion" got pinned between rocks about 4:40 a.m. The vessel sustained minimal damage and 2 people on board and a dog were not injured. The men had been out on the water for about 24 hrs. The situation was under control at 5:30 a.m., according to the CG, which had a rescue boat stay with the disabled vessel until a commercial tow boat arrived to pull it to Sadler Point Marine Center in the Ortega River. The trip to the marina took 5 hrs.

11-09-12 PALM BEACH, FL In a jam: Boat gets stuck after hitting span palmbeachdailynews.com (11-09-12) A 24-ft. sailboat struck the N. side of the Southern Boulevard bridge and became stuck there just after 3 o'clock Fri. (11-09), Palm Beach Police Capt. Jeff Trylch said. The boat’s captain was waiting for the bridge to open when the current pushed the boat into the bridge. “The current is still moving S. and he ran out of gas, so he can’t motor his sailboat away from there,” Trylch said. “When the tide goes out, the current will head N. and the boat will be able to sail away from the bridge.” A commercial tow boat was on scene to help pull the boat away from the bridge. There was no damage to the bridge and the span was able to open and close.

11-11-12 KANE, PA 1 dead, 1 missing in Pa. after canoe capsizes sfgate.com (11-12-12) Authorities say one person is dead and another missing after their canoe capsized on a NW Pennsylvania reservoir. The McKean Co. coroner's office says a woman's body was recovered Sun. afternoon (11-11), a couple of hrs. after the canoe she was riding in overturned on the Allegheny Reservoir. A man who was also in the canoe is missing. Rescuers eventually called off their search for him but are to resume looking Mon. (11-12). Officials did not identify either person involved.

11-08-12 SLIDELL, LA Authorities find missing woman after kayak runs aground wdsu.com (11-09-12) Officials said a woman who went missing in a kayak on the Pearl River in Slidell was found Fri. morning (11-09). Sandra Pierce, 51, went missing in a kayak Thur. (11-08) about 10:30 a.m. after leaving the Crawford Landing in Slidell. Pierce was stranded Thur. night in the Gum Bayou area of Honey Island Swamp without her cell phone. She had gone out in her kayak helping scout locations for a music video shoot, but ran aground. “I tried to pull my kayak through,” she said. “I got deep. I had a life vest. I had clothing, dry bag, everything I needed.” An intensive search was mounted Thur. by boat and by air. Pierce’s husband, Randy Pierce, said he never gave up hope. St. Tammany’s Marine Patrols worked the area. As the morning wore on, they made one last pass in Gum Bayou. “As we were going in, we noticed a red object was coming out waving her arm and there she was,” said Deputy Michael McCrea of the St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said about 50% of searches like this end well.
