11-11-12 CAPE LOOKOUT, NC 3 men get rescued from sinking boat wcti12.com (11-14-12) A captain comes to the rescue when he overhears a distress call from a nearby boat near Cape Lookout that was sinking. This 25-ft. Carolina Classic boat is now resting 80 ft. below the water. "I looked at the boat and saw him waving a lifejacket and I turned to my friend and said 'buddy they're sinking,'" Captain Tom Trevathan said. Trevathan was fishing nearby when he and his crew decided to take action. "It was a little scary knowing that if they went in the water it would have been tough and they probably would have lived 30 min. because the water temperature was so cold, he said. The 3 men on board "Tobacco Man" had called for help to the USCG at Fort Macon Sun. morning (11-11). However, it was Captain Tom and his crew who got to them first. The owner of the boat, Dwight Rouse, believes a hose came off at some point in their travels to a fishing hot spot called 1700 Rock near Cape Lookout. "The boat started to sink pretty fast. It is 25 ft. with a cabin on it so it had a lot of space it had to fill. It was probably 2-3 ft. in the water at the time we called the CG," Rouse said. "It went down in about 30 min. after we pulled em' off," Captain Tom said. The Coast Guard never showed up for the rescue. The sunken boat is valued at an estimated $50,000. Read full story here

11-13-12 ST. BERNARD PARISH, LA Metairie duck hunter rescued after boat sinks off Delacroix nola.com (11-13-12) A Metairie duck hunter was located Tue. afternoon (11-13) in the Grand Lake area in St. Bernard Parish after his 16-ft., flat-bottom boat sank in rough waters on Tue. morning, according to a state Wildlife and Fisheries report. While initial reports state that Daniel Madere, 25, was wearing a life jacket and was able to grab another lifejacket to hold as he made his way to the bank, a USCG official has stated that a CG helicopter found Madere floating in the marsh and alerted St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's deputies who picked Madere up in a boat and brought him to shore. Wildlife and Fisheries official Adam Einck says that search and rescue personnel found Madere about 12:45 p.m. Tue., got him dry clothes and transported him back to the launch near Delacroix where a medical staff was waiting to check his condition. According to Madere and his hunting partners, they were crossing Grand Lake on their way to their duck blinds at 5:15 a.m. When Madere's hunting partner arrived at the blind, he noticed that Madere was not there and doubled back to see if Madere was having trouble with the rough water. "We're guessing that water swamped the boat," Einck said. After a brief search of the area, Madere's duck blind partner called authorities to assist in the search. Throughout the morning, search and rescue personnel were combing a 22.9-sq.-mi. area around Grand Lake, CG Petty Officer Carlos Vega said on Tue. afternoon. Grand Lake sits off Delacroix, between Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parishes. Read full story here.
