11-21-12 KANEOHE BAY, HI Intricate maneuver lifts damaged boat off Kaneohe reef staradvertiser.com (11-23-12). Removing a boat that was crushing protected corals in Kaneohe Bay turned out to be a tricky process that took days, the salvage company operator said Wed. (11-23). If not for the corals that were being crushed by the 40-ft. sampan, the salvage company would have dragged the boat off the reef, said Michael Parker with Parker Marine Corp. He said what should have taken one day ended up taking several days with 3 trial runs before the boat was refloated and removed Sat. (11-17). The Nature Conservancy said when the boat grounded on the reef, it smashed more than 100 coral heads. Parker said that the corals directly under the boat were crushed, leaving a 50-ft-long gash in the reef. Refloating the boat required placing anchors 200-250 ft. away from the vessel where there were no corals. Ropes were floated to keep them off the corals and from inflicting more damage. Large flotation bags were placed around the boat, and 6 pumps capable of pumping 1,400 gal. of water/min. were used to refloat the vessel. The sampan had to be brought straight up so as not to cause any more damage to the corals. The 5-person salvage crew worked at night to take advantage of the high tides and lived on the main workboat during the operation. Parker said the sampan was removed early Sat. It had 4 large holes in the stern where the rudder and propeller shafts went through the hull. Once the boat was refloated, it was brought to Heeia Pier, where 2 large cranes were used to lift it out of the water and place it on a semitrailer. It will have to be demolished because it is too damaged. Kaneohe Bay has more than 60 reefs and is a treacherous place for mariners. The owner told state officials that he didn't have insurance or money to remove it. Parker said he has not yet come up with the bill for the boat's removal, but estimated it will be in the tens of thousands of dollars. Read full story here.

11-20-12 RIVERHEAD, NY Boat catches fire behind Moose Lodge riverheadnewsreview.timesreview.com (11-20-12) A fishing boat docked on the Peconic River caught fire behind the Riverhead Moose Lodge Tue. night (11-20). The Riverhead FD received a call for a boat fire about 8:30 p.m. When they arrived on the scene at the marina, the 28-footer — named “Reattached” — was sending heavy smoke into the sky, officials and witnesses said. James Czachur, treasurer of the Lodge, said he saw the rising smoke from inside the Lodge and raced outside to see what was going on.
“You could see the smoke coming out over that pole,” he said, pointing to a 20-ft.-high dock pole surrounded by a haze of smoke. Firefighters used booster lines to reach the boat and sprayed under the boat’s deck to reach the fire. Though the Riverhead Fire Marshal is still investigating, Mr. Brooks said it appeared the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction. “The electrical systems are all burnt up,” he said. The owner of the boat said he’s had the Carolina Classic-model boat for 2 years and used it to go fishing for swordfish. The owner also said he didn’t have insurance for the boat.
