Deyo Reservoir - From a Mill Pond to a Family Fishing Water - Kevin Jones

10-05-2023 10:38 AM

The Deyo family dreamed of a fishing reservoir on their property, but contamination hindered funding from the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG). The community rallied, and after soil testing, IDFG pledged support despite limited funds. The property was donated to IDFG, with the condition that a reservoir must be built or returned to the landowners.

The local community also developed a grassroots organization called “Friends of Deyo” for the specific purpose of generating funds and services for the development of this reservoir. By 2009, donations and grants valued at nearly $500,000 were amassed which spurred IDFG to provide match for the project.

The 35 ft. tall dam was built, and on July 7, 2011, Deyo Reservoir's groundbreaking took place. The grand opening happened on May 24, 2013, thanks to generous landowners and community support. Now, the campground is booked consistently in the summer, and the reservoir receives over 20,000 hours of fishing and boating effort annually.
