The Value of Intentionally Investing in the Inclusion of Paddlers with Disabilities - Tom Warchol

10-05-2023 10:10 AM

According to the American Canoe Association (ACA) executive summary of 2020, 53% of Americans over age 6 participated in some form of outdoor exercise, a measurable increase of 7.1 million Americans compared to 2019. The latest data from the Outdoor Foundation specific to kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddle boarding found a record number of 37.9 million Americans engaged in paddle sports during 2020 with 2.5 million new paddlers to American waterways. Covid was initially responsible for this increase, however, it looks like these numbers are here to stay.

The growth in kayaking, kayak fishing, and other paddlesports has paddlers seeking launch sites to access the water, yet too many access sites exclude paddlers with disabilities or lack the necessary adaptive features required to enter or exit the water safely and easily.

BoardSafe Docks has partnered with adaptive paddling groups, governmental agencies, communities, park systems, and recreation stakeholders to identify what inclusive features should be included when planning and designing non-motorized water access launch sites. BoardSafe Docks is a nationally recognized and trusted expert in providing education and guidance for their accessible water access products, specifically their highly requested adaptive kayak launch, and adaptive fishing pier.

Attendees will learn how an accessible launch with adaptive features adds value to their community by offering close-to-home recreation, connecting its users to the outdoors and to nature, and offering inclusive fishing and paddling launches that are safe and easy for all to enjoy.
