Washington’s Holistic Approach to Preventing Aquatic Invasive Species and Protecting Recreation - Jessica La Belle

10-05-2023 10:08 AM

While some of the worst aquatic invasive species aren’t yet in Washington, a proactive approach is needed to ensure protection of Washington’s waterways, ecosystems, and recreation. A multi-pronged approach led by the Washington Invasive Species Council focuses on raising awareness and teaching simple preventative actions. This approach first involves public engagement and encouraging all boaters to clean, drain, and dry their watercraft after use. The council recently participated in a multi-agency collaboration to purchase four units that assist with this request. Additionally, at mandatory watercraft inspection checkpoints near the state border, even canines help with this task! Readiness exercises have also been conducted; attendees participate in a simulated invasive species detection and work through the emergency response. Finally, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife has developed specialized decontamination protocols and has invested in professional-grade equipment to ensure their agency is doing its part to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species in Washington. This talk will provide an in-depth look at these tactics and how our efforts serve to protect Washington’s vast recreational opportunities for future generations.
