Thank you on answer of boat insurance being required. I know many homeowners and auto policies have limits for smaller boats built in.
Lawsuits in boating accidents seem to be increasing, especially when the boat owner is not insured. Ohio boat dealers asked the question, so we came to you for state of the state answers when it comes to boat insurance.

My 'back of the envelope' math--I'd guess maybe a 1/3 of registered boats have boat-specific or other insurance. Almost all, if not all, boats that have a bank note have it--so newer and larger boats generally have coverage. Arkansas has an insurance law for PWC and boats with more than 50HP--$50k liability. Utah has a law for the same vessels, but coverage is slightly different. The minimum insurance requirements are: $25,000-/$50,000 bodily injury/death – $15,000 property damage or $65,000 combined minimum per accident. Not a lot of coverage!
There are lots of boats that are covered under an endorsement on home owner's policies as well...But they might not cover the same things that are covered under a boat-specific policy.
